I was quite worried when I first saw this but actually it is a very minor problem in terms of fixability. I had been installing a lot of custom fonts earlier in the day so it wasn’t difficult to put 2 and 2 together as to what was causing it.
Two things must ye know of this issue…
(Blackadder Season 2 quote – I couldn’t resist – the wise woman conversation is one of the best scenes in the whole show)
First… Macs make a fuss if you install multiple versions of the same font.
Second… The default Mac font is Lucida Grande, so this is generally the culprit for the vast majority of issues.
So with this knowledge in hand let us continue.
Surprisingly, you don’t actually have to delete or uninstall anything (or at least I didn’t) to solve this problem. You do have to ensure that you resolve the conflicting fonts though to ensure that the problem doesn’t keep reoccurring. But don’t worry, my solution is pretty simple.
Step One: Resolving conflicting font issues
The easiest way to do this is by using Font Book. Because Font Book is a default OS X install straight from Apple it will tell you exactly what your Mac is unhappy with. So…
1.) Fire up Font Book
Applications > Font Book
2.) Make sure you have selected the All Fonts list, then go down the font list until you come to a font that has an issue – any font with a clash will have a yellow triangle next to it.
3.) Right click on the font and from the drop down menu choose Resolve Duplicates.
If the issue is successfully fixed the multiple versions of the font will be turned off.
Step Two: Making your Mac realise that you have solved the font issues
So in order for your Mac to actually acknowledge that you have sorted out your conflicting font issues you need to empty your font cache. A simple restart does not do this (yes I did try it as I always prefer not to use sudo commands unless I have to). Your Mac will not notice all your hard work resolving all the font conflicts except under duress. So…
NOTE: You need to be an Administrator in order to use a sudo command so change users if you are not currently logged in as one.
1.) Open a Terminal window.
Finder > Go > Utilities > Terminal
2.) Close all the apps that are running then type or copy and paste the following command:
sudo atsutil databases -remove
3.) You will be asked for your admin password. Type it in. The cursor will not move as you type so be careful.
4.) Once the command has run (you will see several lines of script) close Terminal and restart your computer. It is important that you do this straight away.
And that’s it!
Hopefully you will now find your OS X all happy and font issue free! Hooray!

Mac OSX[edit]
Mac OSX (10.5) Leopard is supposed to not use Lucida Grande. I wonder what font will be used.
Where do I download this font?
- I downloaded Lucida Grande from (removed). Could somebody include that in the article, please?84.178.76.125 13:01, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
Facebook?[edit]
Who added that it is used on Facebook? Facebook logo is some other font and the style sheet (http://static.ak.facebook.com/css/common.css.pkg.php?c=39:43:73906) specifying font-family:'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif doesn't precisely mean that the interface is displayed with Lucida Grande. Actually on Windows it's Tahoma by default. There are plenty of web designers who use Macs these days and specify font-family starting with Lucida Grande like Facebook (e. g. veerle.duoh.com, hicksdesign.co.uk). I'll delete this info. 83.9.108.191 (talk) 01:58, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

- Yes, Facebook's logo is not Grande, but its interface text is. (The same applies to Wikipedia – logo is a serif font, but texts throughout the site are set in sans serif.) That particular sequence of fonts you quoted actually means that Lucida Grande is default. CSS use the first available font in the list. That means, if on a Mac it happens that Lucida Grande is absent, Tahoma will then be used. Likewise, I've used Facebook on Windows that has Lucida Grande installed, and Facebook rendered Grande instead of Tahoma. So, I think it's not the case that 'Tahoma is default on Windows'.
- By the way, your paragraph appears twice (identically) on this page. Please don't mind I took the liberty to delete the duplicate one. Tonyngkh (talk) 01:07, 28 December 2009 (UTC)

- But can you freely download Lucida Grande without violating its licence agreement ? Also, I suppose that Facebook could have added 'Lucida Sans' (bundled with every Windows since 98) or used the CSS3 font-face property if their intent was really to use Lucida by default everywhere. Font name in Infobox?[edit]
Lucida Grande Bold Font Free
Had a quick glance through the page history. The family name (or font name) above the Infobox got erased and re-added for a few times. Let's come to a decision here to avoid further edits focusing only on this. From my viewpoint, although the family name appears right at the top of the sample (with fairly large font size), the caption above functions a bit differently (at least to me). The text caption indicates family name and fonts name(s), while within the sample various strings of texts showcase the font—using the font name to do so is just one of the ways. I feel it's more comfortable even though the name appear again right below (see Calibri). I think it's reasonable to make this (keeping the caption) a convention because not all pages have image samples. BUT, it happens that many other pages have got the lines above the Infobox ripped off (see Arial, Times Roman, Segoe#Segoe UI), generating a new de-facto convention.Ok, in short, I'd like to keep the caption. Your thoughts? Tonyngkh (talk) 01:17, 28 December 2009 (UTC)
